Managing the brick-and-mortar six days a week, Storm solely operated the gallery, accompanied by her Studio Cat Velvet . Located right by the Whitney Museum of Art , Storm provided an intimate atmosphere for visiting locals and tourists. The inventory included remaining work from the 2022 solo show, Cirque of The Cool People , private collection studio art, new curations and art merchandise. She hosted private viewings and launched events while creating new work in the open studio space. Retail & Studio Space The open air, naturally lit retail space showcased Storm Ritter's evolving collection, offering fine art, fashion and creative merchandise in store. The artist operated the space while painting in a pop-up studio area and catering to commissions. STORM : I’ve worn many hats for years, but I never compromise my artistry for consumers or sales. I’ve done that, and it doesn’t work, but I do spend equal time on business as art, to make a living. I’m the agent for every element of Storm Ritter, so I step outside of myself and switch personas to market my enterprise. The artist makes decisions for art. The entrepreneur makes decisions for business. Together, they fight. So I have to switch hats to become the creative director, conceptualizing a vision from what’s been created and planned. Then comes the editor hat, for cut-throat choices, despite the other’s input. Critique is indispensable, but it’s just me, so I’ve built a thick skin when I take on roles. I still have chutzpah to keep knocking on doors, making this a ceaseless cycle. The artist and the entrepreneur have opened countless profitable doors, and as the creative director, it’s taxing to equally manage so many. And as the editor, I have to be cold-blooded to close perfectly good doors, but never lock them. I really need more real people to work the doors. Who Is Studio Cat Velvet ? Creative Process Since 2014, she has been painting with her left and right hand, acting as two separate parts of herself. Passionate about duality in life, she finds that trusting her subconscious in her creative process gives her freedom and connection to divine emotions. Music and theatre are a driving force in her work, listening to scores and specific songs on repeat that evoke the concept of frission , also known as goosebumps. A believer in human magic, she is rooted in tactile processes of creation, without use of technology to produce her paintings. There is a mystical unknown about the brain, and she is on a journey to following the path inwards. She relies heavily on her ability to understand numbers as colors and music as vibrant visuals, bringing her into a flow when painting. With faith in her inner monologues and the technicolor world of her third eye, Storm's work is spiritual, not pertaining to a specific organized religion, but a connection with the Universe around her. Education & Community In 2016, Storm received her BA degree in Individualized Study from New York University , studying theatrical design, philosophy and art history at both NYU Tisch and NYU Gallatin School for Individualized Study. During college, she was employed by NBC as an assistant in the wardrobe department at Saturday Night Live and as a stylist assistant for editorials, credited in Marie Claire and Vogue . Prior to NYU, she studied set design and fine art at Wake Forest University and Ringling College of Fine Ar t. Storm earned an International Baccalaureate diploma with a focus on higher level Theatre, English and History. She excelled in scenic design at state level competitions and accepted into national contests that prompted sales of her large-scale puppets and set props to professional theatre companies. East Village Studio News Year 2025 January to February, Storm focused on transforming the East Village Private Studio with new wall/ceiling colors and interior layout in the art salon and work studio. Storm was honored at the Girl Scouts of Greater New York Gala receiving an award for arts volunteer work. May, Storm opened her second gallery location in Meatpacking at 38 Little West 12th Street. Over twenty new pieces were created at the storefront with four showcase gallery events. Building Mural Tattoo Designs 2022 Solo Show Storm Ritter Gallery Year 2021 At the start of the year, Storm hibernated at the West Village Private Studio working on her 2021 collection of canvas paintings, tattooed clients with The Cool People , and catered to client commissions for painted garments. Spring, she was hired to paint The Cool People in the classic ascend pattern inside Blur Nightclub in Dunedin, Florida. This mural design was originated on the walls at Storm Ritter Studio , and the work at Blur Nightclub sparked the popularity for commissions. In Summer, Storm began showing new work in group shows Downtown Manhattan with TMJ Arts Collective and NY Arts Empire , including live painting events with Soho Art Walks . During the run into December, Storm hosted events, including workshops with the NY Girls Scouts . 2021 Solo Show West Village Private Studio Year 2020 After closing Storm Ritter Studio in Greenwich Village, she planned to re-open her storefront in the Lower East Side, but the pandemic forced the business to be operated as an online commerce from her West Village Private Studio . She was consistently commissioned to produce garments for individual clients and as well as provide bulk wholesale for designers. In March, Storm focused on bulk face mask production for donations and sales. With her seamstress Jenny Lin, Storm designed, manufactured by hand, and shipped over 2,000 face masks made of her original textiles to essential workers & customers. Each person is completely unique; never one like the other. Storytellers among us, they are simply reminders that we are never truly alone." Using the right hand for structure, and left hand for emotion, her dynamic motifs are birthed. Empty elements within their forms symbolize unfulfilled qualities we all share. Their organic head line is their identifying characteristic. To the artist, they are ghosts of all genders. Just like us, The Cool People are unique in shape, height and physique. And when curves dominant their stature, it's apparent the divine feminine takes the lead. Something magical happened when Storm started painted with two hands. In the beginning of her practice, she learned that each hand provided not only a separate style, but tapped into dual parts of her brain. The right hand provided technique while consciously creating. The left hand channeled her subconscious, and with experience, awakened childlike whimsy and skill. She describes the painting process as a method of connecting with herself and the universe on a completely freeing and spiritual level.The Cool People are spawned from two sources, opposite but beautifully complimentary. Storm is not a character creator of The Cool People , but an artist channeling something from within herself or around her. A sense of divine was established along her journey. Divinity can be created when something human-made, mirrors nature. She found peace when she allowed The Cool People to guide her artistry and realized that they offer paralleled healing for her clients. Who Are The Cool People? STORM : The Cool People are my iconography, surrealist storytellers and ethereal friends. They are the spirits in your head and around you. And just like us, not one is the same. Their silhouettes are unpredictable in nature, and they are whoever you want (or need) them to be. My otherworldly figures were the first visuals that were organically produced from my ambidextrous painting. Clients called them cool, so that naturally became their name. They are identifiable by their divine head lines—or hats as some say—and their common, sporadic emptiness within their forms, alluding to the feeling we all share of lacking fulfillment. I had an inkling that these figures were special then, and they have proven to influence my collections, philanthropic projects, and the retrospective reflection that perpetually informs my work. The Cool People are dominantly found in monochromatic paintings and in technicolor, detailed compositions, either depicted as classic variations or transformative concepts, like esoteric symbols or personified natural elements. They also are featured in mural wallpaper, textiles, painted garment details, jewelry, logo merch, and tattoo designs, but I’ve barely scratched the surface with their impact. With their elongated and curved bodies, viewers sometimes assume they’re women, but The Cool People are spirits of all gender identities. Like the collective term man includes women, my figurative motifs are also a collective, just a reflection of their female creator. Esoterically led, the series invites souls to identify themselves within with spiritual themes and esoteric imagery alluding tarot cards. Storm paints with her subconscious and conscious in tandem to achieve organic divinity; the spiritual figures of The Cool People are individually birthed with the emotional left hand and structural right hand. Each uniquely spawned with duality, their evolution allows them to ascend as storytellers in a surrealist universe. With gold accents and a focus on a baroque aesthetic, the collection encourages the viewer to fall into trance-like realms in a dimension perhaps familiar. This is the first of a multiple collections focusing on visualizing the worlds of The Cool People. The Realm of the Cool People: an esoteric world, not out of our reach, and damn they have a lot to teach." Storm Ritter's second solo show, "Realm of The Cool People" opened in Winter 2021 in Meatpacking, NYC. The collection included over 30 paintings from the past year, including a gift shop of original merchandise of apparel and signed prints . After opening night, the artist actively worked the gallery catering to small events, client meetings, and guest tours. After the success of the opening night , a two additional showcase events were planned, extending the solo show over three months. Noted as "a gallery of the bizarre" in the New York Post , the surrealist exhbition attracted guests from rockstars and music producers to fashion designers and theatrical actors.
