PAST RETAIL STOREFRONT OF STORM RITTER The first collection of textile designs is inspired by Storm's fine art in 2014-15. The artist continued to photograph large paintings and details of canvases to use as the foundation of each textile concept. As the storefront interior design evolved, Storm drew inspiration from the painted apparel and murals to release new textiles monthly, including screen-printed apparel. Each garment is completely unique due to the lay of the pattern. If t-shirts were made of one textile design, the shirts all became individual works of art. Since was already known as a retailer in Greenwich Village, Storm consistently had a flow of reoccurring visitors at the store to purchase original art and merchandise. And, the inviting showroom was a marriage of retail and exhibition, creating an immersive, polished experience that was friendly and approachable. The brick and mortar location opened April 2023 in collaboration with G23NY, after the success of her first gallery location on at 807 Washington Street. Storm solely operated the store, providing an intimate experience for all guests. This storefront acted as a transformational retail-oriented showroom and studio space for live painting. Located near the Whitney Museum of Art and the Highline , the shop received foot traffic from art lovers and tourists alike. Since the artwork and inventory was of her own accord, she connected with buyers on a personal level, sharing insight about the fine art and merchandise. Storytellers among us, they are simply reminders that we are never truly alone." Using the right hand for structure, and left hand for emotion, her dynamic motifs are birthed. Empty elements within their forms symbolize unfulfilled qualities we all share. Their organic head line is their identifying characteristic. To the artist, they are ghosts of all genders. Just like us, The Cool People are unique in shape, height and physique. And when curves dominant their stature, it's apparent the divine feminine takes the lead. Storm's signature figures came to fruition, and clients voiced them as "cool." As they evolved into a motif, their name was undeniable: The Cool People. Spirits around you, people in your head, or souls within you; they are whatever you want them to be. Each person is completely unique; never one like the other. Something magical happened when Storm started painted with two hands. In the beginning of her practice, she learned that each hand provided not only a separate style, but tapped into dual parts of her brain. The right hand provided technique while consciously creating. The left hand channeled her subconscious, and with experience, awakened childlike whimsy and skill. She describes the painting process as a method of connecting with herself and the universe on a completely freeing and spiritual level. The Cool People are spawned from two sources, opposite but beautifully complimentary. Storm is not a character creator of The Cool People , but an artist channeling something from within herself or around her. A sense of divine was established along her journey. Divinity can be created when something human-made, mirrors nature. She found peace when she allowed The Cool People to guide her artistry and realized that they offer paralleled healing for her clients. " The Cool People are the soulful storytellers in Storm Ritter's surrealist universe." Who Are The Cool People? STORM : The Cool People are my iconography, surrealist storytellers and ethereal friends. They are the spirits in your head and around you. And just like us, not one is the same. Their silhouettes are unpredictable in nature, and they are whoever you want (or need) them to be. Simply, they are reminders that you're never alone. My otherworldly figures were the first visuals that were organically produced from my ambidextrous painting. Clients called them cool, so that naturally became their name. They are identifiable by their divine head lines—or hats as some say—and their common, sporadic emptiness within their forms, alluding to the feeling we all share of lacking fulfillment. I had an inkling that these figures were special then, and they have proven to influence my collections, philanthropic projects, and the retrospective reflection that perpetually informs my work. The Cool People are dominantly found in monochromatic paintings and in technicolor, detailed compositions, either depicted as classic variations or transformative concepts, like esoteric symbols or personified natural elements. They also are featured in mural wallpaper, textiles, painted garment details, jewelry, logo merch, and tattoo designs, but I’ve barely scratched the surface with their impact. With their elongated and curved bodies, viewers sometimes assume they’re women, but The Cool People are spirits of all gender identities. Like the collective term man includes women, my figurative motifs are also a collective, just a reflection of their female creator. The Cool People are indeed versatile, and without a doubt, serve as a reminder that we are never alone. Passionate about duality in life, she finds that trusting her subconscious in her creative process gives her freedom and connection to divine emotions. Music and theatre are a driving force in her work, listening to scores and specific songs on repeat that evoke the concept of frission , also known as goosebumps. A believer in human magic, she is rooted in tactile processes of creation, without use of technology to produce her paintings. There is a mystical unknown about the brain, and she is on a journey to following the path inwards. She relies heavily on her ability to understand numbers as colors and music as vibrant visuals, bringing her into a flow when painting. With faith in her inner monologues and the technicolor world of her third eye, Storm's work is spiritual, not pertaining to a specific organized religion, but a connection with the Universe around her. Storm uses her intense emotions, past memories and ever-expanding imagination to create paintings that have meaning for those who find bliss in dreaming and crave reminders that we are never alone. Prior to painting, Storm curates spiritual, intellectual and emotional stimulus that explores self-didacticism, enlightenment, and escapism. Her work relies on a centrifugal expression, physically and emotionally, that reflects her response from the collected stimuli. She investigates a parallel of nostalgic memory and human experiences of natural magic, like synesthesia and frisson, in studio to produce compositions with esoteric symbolism and visual storytelling. "I have a centrifugal-like process when I ambidextrously paint, similar to channelling, so I’m shrewdly methodical about my sources of inspiration. Sparks do fly from three stimuli categories: spiritual, intellectual and emotional. Once those are pre-orchestrated, my synesthesia experience is directed and controlled for me to produce authentic work. Ans oh, synchronicities, those interconnected observations are completely out of my control and a prime example of a spiritual stimulus. If I follow linked associations in my days, those synchronicities spotlight unexpected themes. Irony and dreams of astroprojective nature also tip off my intuition. If I tether together these details together I see an obscure or crystal-clear meaning to move further with. Intellectual stimuli is then found through isolating connected themes in books, films, and music. I’m an in-depth researcher and logophile, so even old-world literature encourages me to write, and archive. As for the auditory, I seek out stimulating songs that escort my mind’s eye to visualize something untapped. Emotional stimuli is my human response and actions to what’s been learned and prepared. When I start playing, projecting or physically displaying my curated content, I’m immersed in an intentionally designed studio to organically feel my synesthesia experience, react, and visually produce. I’m on the right path when frisson—body chills and goosebumps—comes to fruition, leading to adrenaline rushes, happy tears, or melancholic aches. Frisson is a natural drug for me, and I’m addicted. These elements of my process become core memories, to recycle in the future. My mind’s eye houses an inventory room, lined with abundant filing cabinets. The acquired visuals or phrases from synchronicities, factual discoveries, and synesthesia-induced sensations are classified files, archived and categorized in my cabinet drawers. It’s no dewy decimal system, but my employees up there know how I think." Storytellers among us, they are simply reminders that we are never truly alone." Using the right hand for structure, and left hand for emotion, her dynamic motifs are birthed. Organically painted with the right and left hand in tandem, the surrealist work depicts compositions of natural magic and themes of reincarnated nostalgia. With the physical and emotional response from music, the artist is inspired by the colors of classical opera/operettas, harpsichord infused rock, and cinematic scores from Technicolor musicals to modern melodramas. EXPLORE THE STUDIO Art Production at West Village Studio Before the opening of the storefront, the artist worked from her West Village home studio designing original textiles. All designs began as illustrations and paintings, evolving into large scale patterns. Fabric was digitally printed in large yardage in cotton, jersey, satin and linen blends. The textile patterns included classic t-shirts, blouses, halter tops, tank tops, bralettes, tube tops, dresses, bodysuits, skirts, pants, shorts, headbands, aprons, bags, hats and pet clothes. Unisex apparel was created for adults and children all in the production studio upstairs at Storm Ritter Studio with the prolific seamstress, Jenny Lin. Esoteric Education: Tarot, Palmistry & Frank Andrews Early 2014, I discovered a truly unique soul, Frank Andrews. Perhaps one of the best influences of my lifetime, he became not only a teacher but a tethered friend. We had a serendipitous strange meeting, but that is both of our styles (much like many of his friends I imagine.) I came across his name in a book and dropped him a line, not for a reading, but to ask him why I felt the way I felt. I left him the most wacky voicemail. Truly I just knew I needed to meet him. PORTFOLIO & SHOP Featured Collection The solo exhibition is a showcase of spiritual spectacle in a surrealist universe. “Cirque of The Cool People” invites the viewer's soul into an immersion of phantasmagoria –– with mystical imagery and theatrical composition. The artwork acts as a guide to transport people into a space of divine magic. Using esoteric symbolism and applying theatrical scenic design, the collection is an invitation to escapism and self-enlightenment. The collection encourages the viewer to apply personal didacticism to feel fantastical liberation apart from the structure of realities of life. Noted as "a gallery of the bizarre" in the New York Post , the surrealist exhbition attracted guests from rockstars and music producers to fashion designers and theatrical actors. October - December 2022 37 Little West 12th Street, Meatpacking NYC The Script: “We become what we repeatedly do. I’m Storm Ritter. Everything I do, is my art, and as the conductor of my own life, each day is opening night. One foot in the past, one foot in the present, nostalgia rules my heart; passion rules the mind; but above all, I’m all about being kind. Years back in school, I felt like I only had set tools. So I used my head, emitted time, and started painting, both hands aligned. And ooh, that became the vibe. Painting organically, the unconscious and conscious came alive. People birthed in tandem time. No doubt these silhouettes carry a soul, and viewers repeatedly called them “cool.” They’re you, they’re me, they’re who you want them to be—the realm of “The Cool People,” an esoteric world, not out of our reach. And damn, they have a lot to teach. Ascension is on rise, baby! Hope is about to humanize. Mere mortals who search for happiness, won’t find those portals online. Remember our souls are already fucking divine. Problems are an illusion of the mind. And to be honest, we are all running out of time. So spin that record; feed your brain, it’s not insane to switch the game. Enlightenment by personal rebellion doesn't always birth a felon. Learning keeps your thoughts profound, so demolish the walls that keep you confound. I have an appetite for light, that burns with an indulgent delight. No matter what I do, I do it true. Left brain runs the biz. Right brain, that’s the whiz. Don’t silence your voice to cater to the Man. Everything we do is in our own hands. Find personal style—a symbol of self-reliance. It’s not a science! Just another act of savvy defiance. Getting stuck in mental purgatory, that’s the never-ending story—a completely twisted allegory. Dare to determine your own worth until you physically leave this earth. And all I can say, is keep your heart and soul at bay. There’s no chance you’ll lose your way. Let past moments flicker, and the real gifts will linger. So dream in royal purple, because life is not a dress rehearsal.” Featured Collection The fine art collection opens a door into another existing world around us. She opened the two-story, brick-and-mortar storefront, Storm Ritter Studio , at 14 West 8th Street. Originally the store was named, Graey Studio , but quickly re-named with the artist's authentic branding . Downstairs was the retail storefront and upstairs, a working production studio for fashion and artwork. With staff and interns, the storefront was known for it's vintage shopping experience and eccentric fashion style. Storm painted constantly to produce new textile designs and covered the walls with murals ceiling to floor. Seasonally, she would repaint and curate the spaces to accommodate the changing collections. A hub for creatives, Storm Ritter Studio provided a location to find unique fashion and inspiration in the historic West Village. Textile Designs Established 2015 - 2020 Greenwich Village, New York City The Cool People are spirits around you, people in your head, and souls within you. These soulful storytellers are consistently featured in Storm Ritter's surrealist universe, adopting esoteric and theatrical themes. Using the right hand for structure, and left hand for emotion, her dynamic motifs are birthed. Thousands of pieces were individually manufactured and exclusively sold in store. Vintage apparel was curated and altered with the original textiles as well. All inventory, events, and day-to-day images are included in the archive. 2019-2020, the artist had plans to move the store to the Lower East Side but due to the pandemic, the business was operated from her West Village home studio. Sales were moved online with a focus on custom orders and fine art until 2022 with the opening of the Storm Ritter Galleries in Meatpacking, NYC.
