The Sator Sea

Years back I discovered the Sator (or Rotas) Square, a latin palindrome of letters. An anagram, it's translated as a prayer and symbol of divine protection.

SATOR

AREPO

TENET

OPERA

ROTAS

It's said that the square was found in a carved stone from the ruins of Pompeii, but also found in various religious texts, magick discourse, and fine artwork. I'm sure much more, but it was mystically striking to me.

I began writing it out in sketchbooks and paintings miscellaneously, feeling that it added a sense of balance and connection to the past.

As someone who who loves to write anagrams ambidextrously, this was very appealing to me.

The new painting, The Sator Sea, is rooted in a spiritual place of protection and juxtaposition. In my mind, this universe presents an underwater foreground. There's a psychedelically immersive quality about the composition and palette. Dark and fiery, but always with a sense of escapism.

On the bottom right corner is a Sator Square, tying together the title and transformative essence of the piece.
